CELEBRATION OF WORLD POETRY DAY AND WORLD WATER DAY, 2017

 

POETRY COMPETITION

 

 

BACKGROUND

 

T. A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC), in its Community Awareness initiative through the School of Continuing Education, and being an institution that fosters talent, and one that acknowledges the essential role of water to human existence, celebrates World Poetry Day and World Water Day, 2017, observed on March 21 and March 22, respectively.

 

 

CELEBRATION

 

To celebrate the two days, TAMCC will hold a poetry competition.

 

 

CATEGORIES

 

The competition will be opened to two categories of personsprimary-school-aged children, targeting children between the ages of 7 and 11; and secondary-school- / college-aged children, for children between the ages of 12 and 18.

 

 

COMMUNITY AWARENESS

 

The competition will allow young minds to research on a pertinent issue in our society—

Wastewater. They will write on the theme “Why waste water?”, which is the international theme designated by the United Nations for this year’s celebration of World Water Day; and put together their findings in a poetic style – through poetry.

 

The winning poems will be published on TAMCC’s website, www.tamcc.edu.gd, and in its newsletter. It will also be published on Nawasa’s website,www.nawasa.gd. Additionally, the poems will be published in the media. Finally, students will read their poems at the prize-giving ceremony.

In these ways, the children and also the general public will be sensitised on the issue of Wastewater.

 

 

LAUNCH

 

The competition will be launched on March 22, 2017 when Nawasa launches its celebration of World Water Day.

 

 

DURATION

 

The competition will run for four weeks, beginning on March 22 and ending on May 12, 2017 (March 22 – May 12, 2017).Students will therefore have four weeks during which time they can carry-out their research on the topic, and compose and submit their poems.

 

 

SUBMISSIONS

 

Entries can be submitted to us at the College via email JLIB_HTML_CLOAKING ; and copied to  JLIB_HTML_CLOAKING .

 

Each participating student is only allowed to submit one entry – one poem.

 

The work must be creative and originalfocused on the topic; and written by the participating student himself/herself.

 

 

PRIZES

 

Prizes will be awarded for the top three poems from each category - 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

 

(1)  NAWASA will sponsor the prizesfor the1st place winner from each category.

Each 1st place winner will receive $500.00 plus a trophy.

 

(2)  ARIZA Credit Unionand TAMCC’s Department of Student Affairswill sponsor the prizes for the 2nd place winnerfrom each category.

Each 2ndplace winner will receive a membership account at Ariza Credit Union, amounting to $260.00. In addition, TAMCC’s Department of Student Affairs will contribute $100.00 towards the account.

 

(3)  Glenelg Spring Water and TAMCC’s Department of Student Affairswill sponsor the prizesfor the 3rd place winner from each category.

Each 3rdplace winner will receive a case of water from Glenelg Spring Water. In addition, TAMCC’s Department of Student Affairs will give $100.00.

 

 

(4)  TAMCC will also give a plaque to the winning schools.

 

AWARD CEREMONY

 

The winners will be presented with their prize(s) on May 5, 2017, at a prize-giving ceremony to take place at TAMCC, with a representative from each sponsor attendingthe ceremony to make the presentation to the winners.
