On April 17, the Confucius Institute at T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) held a grand celebration for International Chinese Language Day under the theme “Chinese: A Gift Through Time.” The event was honored by the presence of Counselor Peng Wenlin and Secretary He Yijun from the Chinese Embassy in Grenada, TAMCC Principal Mr. Andrew Abraham, Deputy Principal Dr. John Telesford, and Dean of School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Studies and Grenadian Director of the Confucius Institute, Mr. David Ambrose. Over 100 guests, including TAMCC faculty, students, and members of the broader community, gathered to witness this vibrant event of cultural exchange between China and Grenada.
As the melodious background music played, the venue was instantly infused with a rich Chinese cultural atmosphere. The celebration began with a passionate opening speech from Counselor Peng Wenlin. He brought out a traditional Chinese “福” (blessing) character, symbolizing good fortune, to extend his heartfelt wishes to all attendees, setting a warm and festive tone for the event.
What followed was an engaging array of cultural displays and interactive activities. Participants enthusiastically took part in hands-on experiences such as “Character Construction Puzzle,” “Calligraphy Flow,” “Creative Paper-Cutting,” and “Blindfolded Blessings.” These immersive activities offered a unique window into the beauty and charm of traditional Chinese culture. At the same time, fun interactive games such as “Chinese Character Riddles,” “China Knowledge
Quiz,” “Ball Sprint,” “Ping-Pong Relay,” and “Leap Together” blended cultural knowledge with playful challenges, sparking curiosity about the similarities and differences between Chinese and Grenadian cultures while deepening mutual understanding and friendship. Shifu Edison and Mr. Javid, student of TAMCC performed Kung Fun, which earned tremendous applause from the audience.
The highlight of the event came during the final group performance, where all attendees joined in singing the International Chinese Language Day theme song, composed by the Confucius Institute. With powerful vocals and heartfelt emotion, the song brought the event to a stirring climax, painting a vivid picture of cultural connection.
To conclude the celebration, the Confucius Institute served freshly made dumplings, adding a warm and delicious touch to the cultural feast. Many participants expressed that the event not only deepened their appreciation for the Chinese language, but also nurtured a greater love and understanding of Chinese culture in a fun and welcoming setting. This year’s International Chinese Language Day celebration held profound significance. It offered the Grenadian public a journey “through time” into Chinese culture, allowing them to experience the beauty of Chinese characters and traditional arts through games and practice. More importantly, it built a cultural bridge connecting the hearts of the Chinese and Grenadian people and opened a new chapter in the story of China-Grenada cultural exchange.
